The Luxury of Motherhood
Dear Mr. President,
I am a mother, I have 4 children, and I stay at home.....miraculously, I am able to do so on less than the six figure income that your family seems to require. So, let me give you a few pointers.
That birthday present I made and everyone made such a fuss over at the party..... I didn't spend hours doing that because I didn't have anything better to do or because I wanted to hear oohs and aahs or because I wanted to show up all the working moms...I made that present because, quite frankly, I have to get the biggest bang for my buck and if it means that I have to be cleaver or crafty or stay up half the night so that my kid can bring a gift she is proud to give, then so be it.
I shop the clearance rack FIRST....usually off season. My running shoes are last generation and I'm THRILLED when an older cousin or friend hands down some of the clothes they've outgrown to us. When the kids need something I beat the bushes for the best possible quality at the lowest possible price....that can take a fair amount of time.
I cook....from scratch. We don't eat premade or frozen or fast food, that stuff is too expensive. I bake the class treats because who can walk into a bakery and purchase enough cupcakes for the 1st grade class? Not me!
I need new carpet in my family room and most of my furniture came from estate sales.
When I wanted a gym membership I started teaching a few classes a week at the gym because that got me access to the gym for free.
I have the best dress code of any office and I can honestly say I love my co-workers with all my heart. I guess when I put it all down on paper, I see that I truly do live a life of luxury. I am rich, just not in the world's eyes.....my treasure is my family.
